The Tricky Treatise: The Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches) and the European Witch Hunts

Beth T. Kilmarx, Associate Dean for Special Collections and Director of the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives at the Texas A&M University Libraries, will discuss the publishing history of one of the earliest and most famous treatises on witches. The Malleus Maleficarum (The Hammer of Witches) was written in 1486 by Heinrich Kramer, with possible attributions to Jacob Sprenger. Associate Dean Kilmarx will present examples of the various editions of the Malleus Maleficarum published in the subsequent 534 years, including the Cushing Library’s copy printed in 1574.

About the Speaker: Beth T. Kilmarx is the Associate Dean for Special Collections and Director of the Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. She is a former curator of rare books with over 30 years of experience in special collections librarianship. Her areas of specialization include: the history of the book, 19th-century American cloth bindings, cultural heritage preservation methods and theory, and special collections administration.
