A Tale of Two Cantorales

A Tale of Two Cantorales

From the 15th through the 19th centuries the Spanish-speaking world had its own way of notating and performing chant and sacred music in Latin, and in some cases even its own repertoire. In this presentation, I explore two beautiful choir books in the Cushing Library (one a manuscript from colonial Mexico, the other from 19th-century Spain), and discuss challenges encountered and discoveries made in the process of dating these books, transcribing the music and determining its origin. The presentation is further enriched with selections from both cantorales, sung and pre-recorded by local singers, bringing this centuries-old music to life.
