1,134 French Knots: Creating an Embroidered Edition

1,134 French Knots: Creating an Embroidered Edition

At the beginning of 2017 Erin Fletcher, owner of Herringbone Bindery in South Boston, was commissioned from 21st Editions to create an edition of 18 large-scale bindings. The project, titled Colour, combines the work of poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and fashion photographer Robert Farber. Colour pairs an excerpt from Goethe's Theory of Colours, which was originally published in 1810, alongside fashion images from the 1980s and 90s. Over time the negatives have been to degrade , creating discoloration and cracks in the original images. Viewing these images with Goethe’s words, you begin to understand the relationships between colors and experience. The design for these bindings and it’s accompanied box is pulled from various elements within the photographs and is achieved through back-pared onlays (some were painted, sanded and sprinkled), foil tooling, and hand embroidery leather techniques.

This presentation will speak to the design and implementation of this beautiful and ambitious edition, as well as an open QA with the speaker at conclusion.
